- FAMILY & COMMUNITY
We are parents, spouses and active community members. We share a determination for a more sustainable and just society and want our work to make a real contribution towards that goal.
- What does it mean for you?
Each employee that works on your project is also an owner of the business ensuring quality, efficiency, and reliability that only those with a vested interest in the long term can bring to the table.
In addition, Viridian is embedded in the communities it serves, providing education, community involvement, annual donations to local groups and providing local employment.
- How did we come together?
In 2012, three fellow alumni from Vancouver Island University’s Green Building & Renewable Energy Program were looking to take their skills and education to the next level by starting a unique business on Vancouver Island. They were looking to create an equal partnership one-stop shop for renewable energy systems, from design to installation to service. They partnered up with Don Skerik, Sam Pyefinch and Juergen Seuzle to create a team with electrical, plumbing and heating to back up the renewable energy expertise of the others.
Later in 2014, Eric Smiley would be added to the group to add his engineering and design expertise, industry and code knowledge. In 2015, Mike Isbrucker joined the coop with his 15 years of experience as a specialized solar and renewable energy electrician. In addition, Steve Unger (P.Eng) and Clayton Fischer (Red Seal Electrician) joined to help Viridian develop more markets.
- Why Co-operative?
Viridian was established in 2012, the international year of Cooperatives. Tired and disillusioned about what the corporate path offered, the founders set out to achieve something more than profit. They asked themselves, “Can a business be successful, connected with community, and strive for a broader goal than mere dollar profit?”, “Is it possible to have “right livelihood” for its members and a triple bottom line objective for the business. Can we build on all fronts - personal wealth, environmental protection, education, community resiliency?
- What is a Worker's Co-operative?
"Worker co-operatives are businesses that are owned and democratically controlled by the members. The main purpose of a worker co-operative is to provide employment for its members through operating an enterprise that follows the Co-operative Principles and Values.
The worker co-op’s primary goal in operating an enterprise is for service to its employees and its community rather than in service to the owners of capital. The goal is to provide the best possible employment conditions for the members and to provide the customers and community with a service or product at a fair price that meets their needs and leads to a sustainable community." - Canadian Worker's Coop Federation
